How to choose
A protein skimmer pulls dissolved organics out of the water before they break down into nitrate and phosphate. Size it by real bioload and sump water depth, not the box's maximum gallon rating. Quiet operation, easy cup cleaning and stable foam with changing water levels separate good skimmers from frustrating ones.
- Check the required sump water depth before you buy.
- Expect a break-in period of days to a couple of weeks.
- Clean the neck and cup weekly. A dirty neck kills foam production.
For the science behind it, read our Nitrate and phosphate guide.
How we review: we paraphrase what owners report in retailer reviews and forum threads, plus picks and test results from BRStv, Reef2Reef discussions and published reef chemists. We only show a rating when we verified it at the source, with the date we checked. We don't invent scores or quotes. Prices and stock change, so check the retailer.
